Washington is trying to split the unity of the Ukrainian and Russian nations, Russia’s Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova says. She made the statement commenting on the words of US Ambassador at Large for International Religious Freedom Sam Brownback who promised to strengthen anti-Russian sanctions because Moscow had allegedly violated freedom of religion, RT reports.

Russian MFA reminded that Brownback personally interfered very actively in the affairs of the Ukrainian church and promoted the imposition of autocephaly alien to millions of Orthodox worshippers in Ukraine. It was the State Department that indulged the activities of the Ukrainian President and the Patriarch of Constantinople, which made the church split deeper, Zakharova added.

Most likely Washington prefers to arrange a clash of two nations on religious grounds. And those who continue to resist will end up either under US sanctions or will be arrested by Ukrainian intelligence.

Russkiy Mir reported earlier the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church to have stated that Kiev was increasing pressure on the bishops to force them to join the so-called unifying council.
