The final year student of the Specialized Educational and Scientific Center of Novosibirsk State University Ivan Ogloblin won the International Youth Math Challenge 2018 in India. Maria Khanina from the same educational institution won the silver medal. 78 teams from sixteen countries took part in the competition, the website of the educational center reports.

The assignments were printed in English and Novosibirsk students had to spend the precious time on translating them first. This difficulty, however, did not stop them from winning. Ivan Ogloblin and Maria Khanina had taken a training course on mathematical terminology in English before the competition. In addition to personal awards, the participants from Novosibirsk received a special prize for team discipline.

According to Khanina, the Russian students went through a lot of team and individual competitions during four days. One of the organizers’ goal was to check whether students could quickly and effectively work as a team. For example, the answer of the problem, which was solved by one team member, was necessary to solve the task of another member. If the first participant had been wrong, neither the second would have guessed right.

The competition took place in Indian City Montessori School, which was considered to be the largest school in the world. It made it to the Guinness Book of Records with its 55 thousand students.
