The Russian Constitution celebrates its 25th anniversary on Wednesday, December 12, TASS reports. The fundamental law of the country, which significantly changed the system of top public authorities, was adopted by the national referendum. It took three years to prepare the text of the new Constitution. It was adopted after a political crisis and armed confrontation.

The Russian President Vladimir Putin will hold a solemn reception in the Kremlin to honor the date. By tradition, the president will meet with the judges of the Constitutional Court.

Vladimir Putin, who is the guarantor of the Constitution, has repeatedly said that it has great potential for the development of civil society and democracy. In his opinion, no global changes should be made to the Basic Law.

Experts call the Russian Constitution one of the most stable documents in the world. For 25 years it only saw a few notable changes, including the increase of presidential term and terms of office for the deputies of the State Duma.

According to Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, no upheavals in the economy or politics should make us lose faith in the ideals of the rule of law. The prime minister is confident that the most important result of the adoption of the Constitution was the return of state and public life to the legal, constitutional field, which, in turn, led to the refusal to use violence and confrontation as ways of solving political issues.

Dmitry Medvedev noted that the Constitution established a balance between freedom and responsibility by moving away from distortions in the direction of straightforward liberalism and away from dissolving the interests of citizens in the interests of society and the state.
