Indian’s Kerala state hosts Festival of Russian Language and Literature

The Festival of the Russian Language and Literature organized by a Russian federal cultural agency, Rossotrudnichestvo, takes place in India. This is the 8th consecutive time when Indian city of Trivandrum hosts the event, the website of the agency reports. Moscow State Museum of Sergei Yesenin traditionally takes part in it.

Cultural luminaries, businessmen, writers, interpreters, journalists as well as compatriots, teachers of Russian and students are on a broad list of the guests. The program of the festival includes a skills contest for local school children and students who study the Russian language.  

The works of Alexander Solzhenitsyn will be discussed during a special panel. This year marks the centenary of famous Russian writer and Nobel Prize winner. 

Everyone speaking at the opening ceremony noted that the Russian language and literature are tremendously important for the progress of interstate relations. The Indian readers have been admiring the books of Pushkin, Tolstoy, Dostoevsky for years, their works inspire Indian writers. The translations of Russian classics into Malayalam serve as a prove of it.


The Russian Language serves as a mediator in the cultural exchange of our countries as well as the Russian cinema, which makes a great contribution to the promotion of Russian culture.

The special Yesenin Award was handed out to Indian translator Govindununi, who was noted for his contribution to the promotion of Russian literature in India and the translation of Leo Tolstoy’s novel Hadji Murad.
