The Day of the Unknown Soldier has been celebrated on December 3, TASS reports. This memorial day was established five years ago. On December, 3, 1966 the remains of the unknown soldier were reburied near the Kremlin walls during a solemn ceremony. A year later, on the eve of the Victory Day the Eternal Flame was lit at the site near the memorial.
The main purpose of this day is to commemorate the people killed in the battle, Russia’s Council speaker Valentina Matvienko claims. It is unacceptable to forget about those who sacrificed their lives for the homeland, those whose heroic acts remained nameless.
"There’s no other country in the world with such a large number of soldiers gone missing as the Soviet Union," Matvienko noted. She said that members of search teams did a lot nowadays to eternize the memory of the fallen unknown fighters. Residents of Russia, especially the young people, should not forget the history of Russia, they must be proud of the past, respect and appreciate the present, the speaker said.
The Ministry of Defense has made public some documents on the 1941 Battle of Moscow to commemorate this date. The documents include the registration card of the military burial site where the remains buried in the Aleksandrovskiy Sad were taken. The burial site was situated 40 kilometers from Moscow at Leningradskoe highway direction. In the winter of 1941 the Moscow defense was there.
The Day of the Unknown Soldier is celebrated worldwide. The Russian diplomats are going to lay flowers at the WWII memorial in Washington.
A few Greek towns are going to honor the memory of the fallen soldiers. The flowers are to be laid to the memorial of the Soviet soldier in Athens. Russian compatriots are organizing memorial events in Alexandroupolis, Chania and Thessaloniki
The opening of the memorial in the Czech city of Sokolov after the restoration was timed to the Day of the Unknown Soldier. It is installed above the mass grave where more than two thousand soldiers of the Red Army rest.
Another memorial event was held at the Hurth-Knapzack cemetery where 106 Soviet prisoners of war were buried. The event was organized by Memory for the Future – a public organization from Cologne with the participation of the General Consulate of the Russia in Bonn and the representatives of the local Cossacks.
Diplomats and Russian compatriots in China honored the memory of the dead soldiers at the military cemetery in Harbin.
