Moscow, Delhi and Tehran will soon discuss the launch of the North-South International Transport Corridor, RIA Novosti reports. According to Iranian media, it will be an alternative to the Suez Canal.  Its length slightly exceeds 7000 kilometers. The project involves both rail and water transportation.

Indian goods will be delivered to the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas on the Persian Gulf. Then they will be transported by railway to Bandar-e Anzali on the Caspian Sea and sent to Russian city of Astrakhan by ships. Then the train will deliver them to Europe.

The North-South Corridor will be much shorter than the route through the Suez Canal. The transportation cost will noticeably decline. Delivery time and price will decrease approximately by 30-40%.

For example, the goods delivery from Mumbai to the Russian capital will become 20 days faster. The new way is expected to transport up to 30 million tons.

Earlier, the Indian Minister of Commerce and Industry Suresh Prabhu noted that it was necessary to launch the project as soon as possible and start actively use it. The corridor was already tested a few years ago.
