The Mirror by Tarkovsky enters top-20 BBC best foreign films

Four works by the Russian director Andrei Tarkovsky have been included in the top-100 best foreign-language films made by the British television corporation BBC, TASS reports.

The Mirror secures the number 20 spot ahead of Andrei Rublev on 40th position. Stalker was the 49th in the ranking, Solaris judged to be 57th.

The list includes a historical drama Battleship Potemkin by Sergey Eisenstein, placing it on the twenty-fourth position. In addition, the raking comprises Elem Klimov's military drama Come and See. It occupies the 59th position.

The list was curated by 209 film critics across 43 countries including four Russian experts.

There were more films in French than in any other language – 27 ones. 12 tapes are in Chinese. The Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai (Japan) is at number one. Bicycle Thieves by Vittorio de Sica (Italy) occupies the second position. The third is Tokyo Tale by Yasujirô Ozu (Japan).

According to Russkiy Mir, last year the 85th birth anniversary of Andrei Tarkovsky was marked. It was widely celebrated not only in Russia and abroad. Every year Ivanovo region, the homeland of the director, holds the Mirror film festival. The Ryazan region authorities are going to open a center named after Tarkovsky in the Myasnaya village. Almost half a century ago, the director's family purchased a house there. People who knew him lived there not so long ago.
