Ceremonial opening of the bust of the Russian writer Maxim Gorky was held in the city of Sorrento, where he lived from time to time for about ten years. The monument installation was initiated by the Mayor’s Office of the Italian city and the arrangements committee of the Gorky Prize, which is awarded to the best writers and translators of Italy every year, TASS reports.

The bust of Maxim Gorky is installed on a high column; the arrangement is complemented by gulls, which seem to carry the writer over the city. The sculpture was created by Alexander Rukavishnikov, a Russian sculptor. Timerbulat Karimov, a Russian philanthropist, sponsored the installation. Piazza della Vittoria, one of Sorrento central squares, was chosen as the place for installation.

Idea to install a monument to Maxim Gorky in Sorrento was born a few years ago during annual events commemorating the Russian classical writer held by Russian and Italian researches and admirers of his works. The bust installation coincides with the 150th birthday anniversary of Maxim Gorky, which is celebrated this year.

Earlier the Russkiy Mir quoted Pasquale Terracciano, the Ambassador of Italy in Russia, who believes that installation of the monument to Gorky testifies of close cultural ties between two countries.

Gorky wrote many of his best works in Sorrento and the Island of Capri. His impressions on life in Italy and local folklore were reflected in his Tales of Italy, a cycle of short stories.
