Russian Parliament approves bill on simplified Russian citizenship process

The Russian State Duma has approved in the first reading an Interior ministry's draft law aimed to ease citizenship obtaining, TASS reports. It proposes to empower the head of state to compile a list of foreigners who have the right to obtain Russian citizenship in a simplified manner.

These changes will help compatriots who live in countries where the social, political and economic situation becomes extremely difficult, where armed conflicts erupt or coups-d'état happen.

According to Chairman of Russia’s State Duma Committee for CIS Affairs Leonid Kalashnikov, the document will mainly help Ukrainian refugees to obtain citizenship. The head of state will be able to choose applicants for simplified citizenship. So, there is no need to change the legislature.

In addition, the bill implicates eased citizenship process for compatriots participating in the resettlement program. The new rules will affect those who already dispose a temporary residence or residence permit. They will be able to apply for citizenship in a simplified manner "in a chosen region". It is necessary to obtain a medical certificate proving the absence of drug addiction, AIDS and infectious diseases that are dangerous to others. Also the procedure for fingerprinting will be mandatory.

State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin stressed that the document implements the provisions of the the Presidential Address to the Federal Assembly.

Earlier at Direct Line with Vladimir Putin the President noted that the process of obtaining Russian citizenship should be facilitated. According to him, the country should liberalize the situation in the sphere of Russian citizenship obtaining.
