Russkiy Mir Foundation opens library room in Reykjavik

A solemn opening ceremony of the Russkiy Mir Foundation's room in the Russian Cultural Center Library took place in Reykjavik on October 4, the 75th anniversary of the Russia and Iceland diplomatic relations establishment. The Saint Nicholas parish of the Moscow Patriarchate in Reykjavik supports the Center.

The opening ceremony of the Library room in the Russian Library has become a major cultural and political event for Iceland. It is especially important with a decrease in relations between the two countries. The event was attended by representatives of the Iceland elite, including 5th Iceland's president Olafur Grimsson who led the country from 1996 to 2016, as well as the Minister of Education, Science and Culture Lilja Alfredsdottir.

Many Russian-speaking residents of Iceland looked forward to this occasion. The library at the Saint Nicholas parish got textbooks, manuals, and methodological materials for all who study Russian. The books were delivered by the Russkiy Mir Foundation which created a network of Russian centers and Russian world offices in more than a hundred countries all over the world.

The Library room opening was organized also by the efforts of the Russian Embassy in Iceland, the St. Nicholas Parish of the Russian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate in Reykjavik, the Russian Cultural Center Russlandingar. New books are already available in the library.

Project of St. Nicholas Church and Russian Cultural Center in Reykjavik

The Russian Library at the Saint Nicholas parish in Reykjavik was opened in 2012. This is the first long-term project of the Cultural and Spiritual Center. St. Nicholas parish in Reykjavik implements the project with the blessing of the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Kirill. In addition to the Orthodox church and the Russian literature library the center will open a Russian language school. Cultural and festive events for compatriots in Iceland will take place there.

The Russian Library is the only public library of Russian literature in Iceland. It already contains several thousand copies of books, the collection is regularly updated with new magazines and other periodicals in Russian as well as books donated by Russia and Iceland.
