Russian compatriots living in Cyprus have registered their own party called I am a Citizen, the World Coordinating Council of Russian Compatriots website reports. According to the initiator and leader of the party Alexei Vorobyov this idea first appeared a year ago.

The founders of the party are Russian businessmen who live on the island and have Cypriot citizenship. Vorobiev has spent more than fifteen years in Cyprus. He also is credited with the appearance of the first Russian-language Cypriot radio station called Russian Wave in Cyprus.

He explained that the party wanted to reach the Cypriots and the local authorities through the message about the necessity for constructive changes. There are ecology and economic development among the priorities. Modern technologies, infrastructure improvement are needed. In addition, the transformation of the legislative framework is required to change inefficient laws, and to resist corruption more actively.

Andrei Vorobiev assured that members of the party were going to take an active part in the social and political life of the country. I am a Citizen plans to nominate his candidate for the European Parliament elections as well as to compete for a place in Cyprus parliament.

Unfortunately, it's unlikely to win elections. Despite the fact that the Russian community includes about 40 thousand people, there are less than seven thousand Cypriots among them. The others don't have the right to vote.

However, the party counts on the support not only from the Russian-speaking citizens of Cyprus but also from all the Cypriots.
