The First World War Heroes Commemoration Day is marked today, on August 1, in Russia, TASS reports. It is timed with the anniversary of the Russian Empire entering into the war.

Memorial campaigns are being held all over the country. They are conducted by the Russian Military Historical Society. People will lay flowers to monuments of WWI Heroes in Kaliningrad, Pskov, Saransk and Tula. France and Poland will join the Commemoration Day.

The campaigns are conducted near the Poklonnaya Hill and at Memorial Park Complex of WWI Heroes in Moscow.

Mass heroism was peculiar of all soldiers and officers of the Russian Army. More than a million inferior officers became holders of the Order of St. George. In accordance with some data, Russia lost more than two million people during WWI. Fortunately, a lot has been done so that the war is not forgotten.

As the Russkiy Mir Foundation reported earlier, the website of Memory of Heroes of Great War of 1914 – 1918 was started a year ago. It contains information about soldiers and officers who fought during the war. Sergei Naryshkin initiated this work. The website provides an opportunity to extend knowledge of the country’s population about one of the most tragic and vast events in the world history. But the most important thing is that millions of names will return from the oblivion.
