Blumberg Agency: Putin proposes Trump to hold a referendum in Donbass

20.07.2018

Presidential Administration of the Russian Federation

As per the Blumberg agency, Russian President Vladimir Putin has made a proposal to his American counterpart Donald Trump to discuss the status of non-acknowledged republics of Donbass at the referendum, according to the Vedomosti newspaper. This question was touched upon during the summit of the two countries’ leaders, which was held this week in the capital of Finland. In accordance with the Blumberg sources, President talked about it in the course of the closed part of the meeting held before the meeting with the Russian Ambassadors. Referendum was supposed to be held with participation of the observers of the international community.

Before the summit began, the Ukrainian conflict had been supposed to be discussed during Putin-Trump summit in Helsinki. Nevertheless, nothing was mentioned about this topic at the final conference.

According to Blumberg agency, Donald Trump has decided that he needs to think the proposal of the referendum over within some time and asked not to uncover this information.

Earlier Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov has told that the Russian and American Presidents discussed several other proposals but these topics require thorough consideration.

As Vladimir Putin said at the meeting with the Russian ambassadors, there is great risk that the conflict at the south-east of Ukraine is to be aggravated. The main reason for this is that Kiev fails to observe the undertaken responsibilities and is reluctant to follow a peaceful way of resolving the conflict.

In opinion of the Russian President, the only reason for a political way out of the crisis is Minsk agreements.
