Despite the ready decision to prolong anti-Russian sanctions, Europe still has disputes on this question, according to senator Konstantin Kosachev. Such was the comment made by the Head of Council of the Federation Committee on Foreign Affairs at his Facebook page regarding the decision of the leaders of the European countries to prolong anti-Russian sanctions.

European Union leaders at the Euro summit agreed to prolong sanctions against Russia for another half a year. There was not a hot discussion around the question, so the decision was made soon after the talks on observation of Minsk agreements and present state of affairs in Ukraine, RIA Novosti reports.

In opinion of Kosachev, a range of choices on the sanctions is too wide. While Warsaw insists on its steadfast position, Rome is in doubts. Politician has mentioned that it is crystal clear for everybody that sanctions do not have the expected effect. Besides, business is suffering losses and therefore is putting more and more pressure on the politicians.

Member of the Upper Chamber of the Russian Parliament is sure that the decision of Brussels, for the most part, concerns Kiev, not Moscow. The European Union gives the Ukrainian authorities a chance to continue derailing Minsk agreements by prolonging the sanctions. This works in favor of the EU members who see Russia as their enemy.

“Current EU decision, alas, is not about Russia. It is about Ukraine, which will be de facto entitled to disregard the Minsk agreements further on in favor of geopolitical ambitions of anti-Russian part of the European Union,” Kosachev wrote.

Senator has said that the sanctions regarding observation of Minsk-2 agreements can be lifted quite quickly, but there should be a trigger for this - apparent progress in implementing the agreements. Russophobian Europe is ready to do everything possible not to let such a trigger happen. They will use all possible means in order that Ukraine would not have true motivation for fulfilling the Minsk agreements.
Besides, Kosachev has pointed out that the European Union does not have any proof-points regarding Crimea in the context of anti-Russian sanctions.
