The 25th Inter-parliamentary Assembly of Orthodoxy in the Athens has become a discussion platform for questions of the parliamentary democracy and Christian values. Head of the Greek Parliament and some members of the Parliament, vice speaker of the Russian State Duma, Ambassadors of Russia and Kazakhstan, archbishops, metropolitans and heads of Russian and Greek Orthodox churches were present at the opening ceremony of the Assembly, RIA Novosti reports.

Greek President Prokopis Pavlopulos thanked organizers of the Assembly for an opportunity to emphasize a fundamental role of the Orthodox Christianity being a true ark of moral principles and values in quite a critical period for the society today. In his opinion, three milestones of the European culture are Christianity, its Orthodox branch, in particular, Spirit of Ancient Greece and the Rome traditions.

Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk read out a message from Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, calling for strengthening the unity of the Orthodox Christianity.

Vice-Speaker of the State Duma of the Russian federation Irina Yarovaya in her address to the Assembly members has underlined that moral, spiritual traditions must become a basis for contemporary politics, which now, unfortunately, is aiming at destruction of the traditional way of life.

Official delegations from 25 countries of the world arrived at the Assembly. Contest of Byzantine iconography was timed with opening the Assembly. An icons’ exhibition followed the contest. The main topic of the exposition presented to delegates and speakers was Resurrection of Christ, which unifies all the Christians in the world. Contest winners were icon painters from Greece, Romania and Ukraine. An icon pained by Russian artist Yuri Zemtsov got People’s Choice Award.
