Documents about first days of Great Patriotic War declassified

Documents of the first days of the Great Patriotic War have become available to the wide audience for the first time. They were posted on the website of Ministry of Defenсe the Russian Federation at the Day of Memory and Sorrow, according to the Ministry’s website. The Day is marked on June 22, the day when the Hitler’s troops attacked USSR.

Orders of senior military authorities of the Soviet Union, documents of military districts including decrees and award papers have been declassified. Beside, a map of the German army with Operation Barbarossa marks is available on the website.
Russian Defense Ministry believes that these archived documents are to stop attempts of history rewriting and to dispel deceitful myths. The posted papers, as per the Ministry, will become an essential part of military and patriotic upbringing of the young generation.

Everybody, interested in the military history, will see documents of Kiev, Leningrad and Western special military districts. They are unique evidence of the first war days to help people plunge into the atmosphere of that tragic and heroic period of time. Drafts of orders, intelligence reports and briefings reflect the spirit of that time.

Rewarding papers witness heroic deeds of the Soviet soldiers. In particular, pilot Stepan Zdorovtsev shot away all the ammunition of the enemies and chopped off their airplane tail units in 5 days after the war started. He was awarded with the title of Hero of the Soviet Union postmortem.
