The Concord party representing Russian-speaking community of the Republic in the Latvian Parliament made an appeal to the Constitutional Court on the subject of changes to the legislation by which Latvian authorities totally annihilated education in the Russian language, DELFI advises.

The politicians headed by the party’s leader, the Mayor of Riga Nils Usakovs are going to challenge the changes into the Law On Education and their aftermath – final transfer of the secondary schools into teaching in the state language only.

According to the politicians, this decision restricts speaking languages of the national minorities in the educational institutions. Besides, the Concord party believes that new law violates several articles of the Constitution.

The party believes that this period is not appropriate for making such important and sensitive decisions. The party has emphasized that such issues should not be resolved during the political debates, as they require serious legal reasoning with consideration of current international circumstances, traditions of the Latvian Republic and experience of other European countries.

Note that the Latvian President Raimonds Vejonis has approved annihilation of the education in the Russian language. Starting 2020/21 academic year all the teaching will be transferred to the Latvian language only. The politicians assure that the transfer will be gradual, however they plan to start reorganization already next academic year.

Russian-speaking community of Latvia sharply criticized this hasty reorganization. They have gone on several strikes against transfer of the schools into the state language and they are not going to give up. The Latvian authorities retaliated with arresting the Russian public rights’ defenders and starting court cases against participants of the All-Latvian parents’ meeting. Latvian Russian Union party’s leader Tatiana Zhdanok has been detained.
