A meeting in protection of the Russian schools is held in the Latvian capital city, according to Alla Berezovskaya who shared the news on her Facebook account. In her words, crowds of people joint the march.

Around 4,500 people gathered by the monument to the Latvian Red Riflemen and marched along the central streets of Riga. The destination of the march was the Governmental building. People were holding banners: For the Russian Schools! For the Right to Study in the Native Language! For Dignity and Freedom of our People! Many people were shouting out – Hands Off the Russian Schools!

The headquarters of the Russian schools’ protection and the Russian Union of Latvia party organized the campaign, which was timed with the Day for Protection of Children marked the day before, on June 1. According to Tatiana Zhdanok, the leader of the Russian Union of Latvia, protesters have only one demand, which is to preserve the right of the Russian children to study in their native language.

The similar campaign was held in Daugavpils the day before.

Note that last time around 10 000 people went on a strike held on May 1. The European Parliament deputy and co-chairman of the Russian Union of Latvia Miroslav Mitrofanov said that the organizers wanted to return the initial meaning to 1 May holiday, which is to fight for interests and rights of its people.

As the Russkiy Mir Foundation reported earlier, in April, despite numerous protests by the Russian-speaking communities, the Latvian President Raimonds Vējonis approved of the amendments to the law on education fully annihilating teaching in the Russian language at Latvian schools. The approved amendments are to come into effect as of 2020.
