Sergei Lavrov and Kim Jong Un agreed on activation of top level contacts

The visit of Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergei Lavrov to North Korea has come to an end. He met North Korean Leader yesterday’s evening. They agreed on activation of contacts on the top level and on talks between Moscow and Pyongyang, TASS reports.

Their meeting was held behind the closed doors. Before it began, Kim Jong Un has said that this meeting is held because the situation demands negotiations. He expressed readiness to exchange opinions and emphasised that the country is interested in extending and activating cooperation with Russia in different directions.

Sergei Lavrov gave to Kim Jong Un the best wishes to fulfil all the initiatives at the Korean Peninsula from Russian President Vladimir Putin. He added that Moscow has heartily welcomed the document signed between South and North Koreas. Sergei Lavrov has explained that Russia will be glad to assist in carrying out this declaration.

Russian Foreign Minister laid flowers to the monument to the Soviet soldiers who died defeating the Kwantung Army of Japan at the Korean Peninsula. He also honoured the memory of Andrey Karlov who was killed in Turkey in 2016. Diplomat headed Russian Embassy in Pyongyang for 6 years contributing a lot into development of the relations between the two countries. A memorial plaque is placed at the Embassy facade.

Note that Sergei Lavrov held talks with his counterpart from North Korea Li Yon-ho. Russian Foreign Minister assured that Moscow would support agreements concerning North Korea, which would correspond to the interests of all the parties involved.
