Claim to the Alexander Gaponenko case was passed to the UN Committee against Torture. The document presents facts on acts of violence and other “cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment” against one of the Russian schools activists, BaltNews reports.

Ruslan Pankratov as one of the statement authors explained that the initiative group has requested the expert evaluation on the human rights violation by the Latvian government, referring to the documents adopted by UN and ratified in Riga.

Pankratov underlined that the Security Police continues to deliberately fuel conflict between different nationalities in the country, aiming to to spread fear among the population of Baltic republic.

The statement authors pointed out that until today the authorities hide the real reasons for the arrest of the human rights activist. Many think that his growing popularity among common people might be the real cause of the arrest.

Let us remember, Latvian prominent human rights defender, co-chairman of the Latvian Non-Citizens Congress and a member of the Russian schools’ protection headquarters Alexander Gaponenko was detained by the Security Police of Latvia. He is suspected of anti-state activities. Gaponenko faces up to 8 years' imprisonment.
