Russian Latvian Union

On May 16, near the walls of Riga's central prison there was a meeting in support of the arrested Russian schools' defenders Alexander Gaponenko and Vladimir Linderman. A few dozens of people participated in the event organized by the Russian Latvian Union.

The activists were holding banners requiring to stop the repressions and free the political prisoners. They have reminded the authorities of the Constitution and the fact that it must be complied with.

As was previously reported by the Russkiy Mir Foundation, two defenders of Russian schools are under arrest at the moment. Аlexander Gaponenko was arrested in end of April, and Vladimir Linderman on May 10. The leader of Russian Latvian Union  Тatiana Zhdanok is also subject to criminal processing. It was initiated after the All-Latvian Parents' Meeting, where shifting to the Latvian language at schools was discussed. The police suspect that some unlawful acts might have taken place at the meeting.
