200th anniversary of Alexander II celebrated in Sofia

Celebrations in honor of Alexander II of Russia called “Tsar-Liberator” were held in Sofia, Bulgaria. There was a gathering with participation of Bulgarian politics and public figures, representatives of Russian Embassy and compatriots. People brought flowers to the monument.

Russian Ambassador in Bulgaria Anatoly Makarov have recalled about achievements and reforms of Alexander II. “He was loved and respected in Russia and abroad. Not many heads of the State before and after him could realize such major modernization plan. Mr. Makarov quoted the Tsar: “The goal of Russia – not to destroy but to create.”

This year Bulgaria celebrates 500 years of liberation from the Ottoman rule. The Russian Tsar is credited with the conclusion of the Russian-Turkish war and the signature of the Treaty of San Stefano which brought victory to Bulgarians. The name of the Emperor of Russia is very well-respected, his memory is honored.
