The world premiere of the Russian movie Sobibor is to take place today in Warsaw, TASS informs. The movie will be officially released in Russia on May 3 and a week later in Poland. It is the first movie directed by famous actor Konstantin Khabensky. The film director plans to come to Warsaw and to present the movie in person.

The movie is based on a true story of the only successful revolt in the Nazi death camp headed by the Red Army Officer Alexander Pechersky. More than 300 prisoners were set free. The Hitler’s soldiers managed to find and kill more than a half of them. Almost 90 people having escaped from the Nazis, fell victims of the Polish collaborationists and local anti-Semites.

The movie is timed with the 75th anniversary of the revolt. The movie fragments were shown to the Russian President Vladimir Putin and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Some fragments of the movie were screened in the German Parliament and at the symposium dedicated to the camp held in Vienna. The pre-premiere screening of the movie was also arranged in the State Duma.

Sobibor camp was situated in Poland. Almost 250 000 people were killed here in less than 2 years. The majority of them were Polish, French, Austrian and Russian Jews. The camp ceased to exist after the prisoners uprising, headed by Pechersky.

Immediately after the prisoners’ escape, fascists razed the camp to the ground and planted potatoes and cabbage on it. After the war was over, the Polish authorities set a monument depicting the mother embracing her child, created a burial mound and established an obelisk made of stone in a form of a gas chamber.

Museum associated with the 50th anniversary of the camp revolt was opened at the territory of the former camp in 1993.
