Russians kids have to speak basic Latvian at pre-school. This amendment to be in force beginning next school year, DELF portal reports. Big changes are coming to the Latvian pre-school education program as well.

According to the new regulations, not only in schools but also in kindergartens all educational process has to be conducted in Latvian. Kids have to be able to communicate about the basic things and adequately respond to questions in Latvian. The only exception to be made for the native language lessons.

Note, this proposal was introduced by the Vice-rector of the Humanities and Educational Sciences in the University of Latvia, ideologist of the last language reform in Latvia Ina Druviete.
