Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra plays Mussorgsky in China

Symphony orchestra, choir and soloists of the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra are performing today in the capital of China, according to the Russian Ministry of Culture’s website. The concert is to take place at one of the central stage grounds of Beijing – at the National center for the Performing Arts. Valery Gergiev is to conduct the concert.

The agenda is dedicated to the works by Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky. Overture to Khovanshchina opera, Pictures at an Exhibition, Night at Bare Mountain and vocal series Songs and Dances of Death. Soloist is Mikhail Petrenko.

Tomorrow music admirers from China will get an opportunity to see Khovanshchina opera on stage.

Gergiev's orchestra traveled to Beijing from Siberian capital Novosibirsk where they performed at the Moscow Easter Festival. It is to continue the next day right after completion of the road tour to China. Two concerts in Krasnoyarsk are scheduled for the day after tomorrow, and then Gergiev is very much anticipated waited in Tomsk, Kemerovo, and later in Omsk and Surgut.

On April 22nd, Symphony Orchestra guided by Gergiev is to participate in the celebrations dedicated to the 20th anniversary of one of the largest European concert halls – Festspielhaus, Germany’s largest opera and concert house located in Baden-Baden. Symphony No. 2 of Jean Sibelius and Pictures at an Exhibition by Modest Mussorgsky to be performed.
