Remains of 21 Soviet warriors solemnly reburied in Budapest

Gala ceremony of the Soviet warriors’ reburial was held yesterday on April 12 in the Hungarian capital, RIA Novosti informs. Russian, Belarusian Kazakh, Moldavian and Azerbaijan diplomats, schoolchildren sent by the Russian Embassy and Hungarian Defense Minister Istvan Simicsko took part in this ceremony.

The remains of the WWII soldiers who died liberating Budapest in winter 1945 were discovered during the construction works. A year ago, the remains of other 15 people were found. The remains of other 6 soldiers were spotted in another part of the city at the beginning of this autumn.

Experts determined their names but failed to get in touch with their relatives. The majority of the dead soldiers drafted into the army from the Ukrainian territory.

Heroes fallen at liberating of the city were buried with military honors at the largest Soviet memorial cemetery Kerepesi opened in the 19th century. It is located in the city center and is the largest European open park of the memorial sculpture. Many famous Hungarian politicians, the state figures and cultural activists are buried here.


After the liberation of Budapest at the beginning of winter 1945, the Soviet soldiers’ graves appeared at the Kerepesi cemetery. Almost 5000 people are buried there.
