Students of Russian-Chinese school in Karamay city located in the north of People’s Republic of China want to continue education at Russian universities, according to the Pedsovet website. 45 pupils of senior grades have been attending advanced classes on the Russian language. They are speaking Russian at physics and math classes.

High School for Physics and Math of Novosibirsk State University and Karamay High School are organizing this project.

Three teachers from Russia are working with gifted children. Yulia Shmakova, the one of the teachers, shared that she used to work in China for several years before teaching Russian in Xinjiang University in Urumqi city. Then she was offered a job at school and she accepted the offer. According to her, local children take their studies very seriously, they work hard and they are very interested in the Russian language.

Teachers share that work in a different language environment is challenging. A teacher has to be an actor, an artist and even a cook.

Apart from the Russian language rules, teachers talk to their pupils about Russian traditions and Russian culture. Teachers baked pancakes at Maslenitsa celebrations at school, a was pretty exotic dish for Chinese children. To explain complicated terminology in Russian, teachers draw on a chalkboard or use multimedia presentations.
