Dormition Cathedral in Helsinki marks its 150th anniversary

26.03.2018

A festive program dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the Dormition Cathedral in Helsinki started on March 25 in the capital of Finland, the Yle website informs. The program was opened by a chorus series of Maximilian Steinberg based on the church chanting. This music composition by the Russian composer of the beginning of the 20th century was believed to be lost for a long time. The music chart was discovered only 15 years ago to be performed in Finland for the first time.

Steinberg is one of the prominent representatives of Saint Petersburg School of Composers – he is an apprentice of Rimsky-Korsakov and a teacher of Shostakovich. The latter held his teacher in high esteem.

A chorus series was jointly performed by the choirs of Dormition Cathedral and Addictio. The festive concert was timed with the Yew Sunday.

The Cathedral of Finnish Orthodox church was constructed according to the project of the Russian architect Gornostaev in Pseudo-Byzantian style. It was opened in 1868.
