All churches should be restored in order to return Christian refugees to their homes in Syria, Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate’s Department for External Church Relations believes. In him opinion, this is the most important task to be fulfilled, RIA Novosti informs. He talked about this during his presentation at the conference “Future of Christianity in the Middle East: Reality and Forecast” organized by Imperial Orthodox Palestine Society.

Metropolitan has noted that the time has come to think about restoration of the country. At this, Metropolitan Hilarion has pointed out that the restitution of all Orthodox temples would help setting interreligious peace. He has explained that appearance of a temple or, at least, a small chapel, which would turn in time into a center of social life and attraction of Christians to the region, leaves a chance that restored settlements would be revived. As per the Russkiy Mir foundation, around 120 Christian temples were damaged in the result of the military operations in Syria. This list contains fully destroyed temples, which need to be restored fromscratch as well as those, which were partially damaged and desecrated.A year ago Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokalamsk has already stated that Russian Orthodox Church isready to help restoring the destroyed churches in Syria.
