Lebanon opens school with Russian language classes

The Russian Minister of Education and Science Olga Vasilyeva inaugurated school with Russian language classes, TASS reports. The secondary educational institution was opened in the city of Shmustar located in the Beqaa valley, according to TASS. The school was founded on the premises of Beqaa International Lyceum where pupils started to study the Russian language on permanent basis last year.

The Russian Minister believes that school inauguration is a proof of growing interest to the Russian language, culture and literature in the Arab countries. She has mentioned that the Ministry of Education and Science together with the Russkiy Mir Foundation, the Russian Humanitarian Mission, Rossotrudnichestvo, Russian Union of Rectors will continue supporting interaction with Lebanon and other Arab countries.

Minister passed books by Russian writers and other studying materials, abridged for the Arab students to the school. Vasilyeva is assured that future school graduates will be able to continue education in Russian universities and get trained as specialists, Lebanon is in need of.

Rector of Lomonosov Moscow State University Viktor Sadovnichiy who was also taking part in the gala opening ceremony, presented the school director Rime Nassif a portrait of M. V. Lomonosov.

The Russian language in Shmustar is studied by almost 1,500 school pupils from the 1st until the 8th grades. Kindergartens will start the Russian language classes in the nearest future.

Olga Vasilyeva is sure that Lebanon can turn into one of the most important partners of our country for educational programmes in the Arab world. She discussed development of the collaboration in the field of education with Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri.

Minister of Education promised to consider an opportunity of increasing a number of students from Lebanon into Russian universities taking into account offshore oil and gas fields’ development plans.
