Georgy Zelma//wikimedia.orgVictory of the Soviet Union in Stalingrad was extremely important for the French – participants of the Opposition, according to the nephew of General de Gaulle – Bernard de Gaulle who shared this point of view in his interview to the Russian Newspaper. He mentioned that after the victory it was clear that the end of the Third Reich was close. The long-awaited victory gave more strength to soldiers for further battles.

“The victory of the Soviet Army on the Volga River had enormous significance for us, undergrounders”, Bernard de Gaulle said.

Common citizens in France remember the Battle of Stalingrad today.

Ex-steel worker Claude Meteiller was ten years old when this significant battle took place. His father returned from work and shared the good news. It was a very important event for Russia and meant soon liberation for France. As per Claude, the victory and those emotions will be imprinted in his memory forever.

The young French remember the Battle too. 28-year-old Hugo Blondell stated that teachers equaled the Battle of Stalingrad with other battles. However, he is sure that this battle was special. “Of course, Americans liberated France, but this happened in the middle of 1944, whereas Russians faced the main attack”, Blondell mentioned.

This year France will celebrate 75th anniversary of the Battle of Stalingrad on a large scale with a thematic flash mob, exhibitions, marches and concerts.
