Belgium tries to lift anti-Russian sanctions

30.01.2018

As per one of the initiators of this resolution, Flemish Interest party leader Filip Dewinter, the decision on the resolution will be made after Prime Minister of the Kingdom Charles Michel comes back from Russia. The visit of the Prime Minister to Russia is scheduled from 29th until 31st of January. The Government’s head is waited back home to express his view on future of the relations with Russia and perspectives of lifting the sanctions.

Dewinter has emphasized that Belgium is much concerned with the politics of sanctions implemented by the European Union. These measures hamper economic growth for Brussels, and impede the export of Belgium. The document states that sanctions cause more inconveniences than advantages to the European Union, on the whole, and to Belgium, in particular. Thus, the country lost more than three billion euros due to decrease in the turnover with Russia for the whole period of sanctions. Now it is high time to lift these restrictions and stabilize the economic relations with the Russian Federation. This will be the second attempt of Brussels to close the question of sanctions for the country. This resolution was declined last year.
