Russian State Duma criticizes discrimination of Russian media in Moldova

25.01.2018

The State Duma of the Russian Federation considers the prohibition of broadcasts in Russian language in Moldova as a violation, RIA Novosti reports. The corresponding statement was approved at the plenary session referring to the actions of the Moldovan authorities as a violation of widely recognized international legal rights for the freedom of speech.

Note that the Moldovan authorities have many times deported Russian journalists out of the country. At the beginning of the year, a bill combating foreign propaganda against Russian mass media was approved in the republic. Currently a range of Russian broadcasts are prohibited in the country.

Moldovan President Igor Dodon` refused to sign the bill calling it anticonstitutional and appealed to the Constitutional court which did not find any infringements in the document in question. The court allowed the Parliament chairman to approve of the law instead of the President.

In their turn, the Russian State Duma deputies addressed the UN, the European Council and Organizations for Security and Cooperation in Europe with a requirement to evaluate the law accepted in Moldova.
