Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs reminds that mass protests are likely to continue in Barcelona.

The reason for disorders is a special election in the region, which took place last week. The parties that support Catalonia’s exit from Spain got the majority of votes in the Legislative Assembly. They received 70 mandates out of 135.

It is worth reminding that earlier a referendum on Catalonia’s exit from Spain took place. 90% of the people voted in favor, with the turnout of 43%. The official Madrid had tried to prevent the voting, so disorders broke out in the region and tensions between separatists and politicians favoring the separation increased.

Catalonian Parliament announced independence for the republic. In response the Spanish deputies voted for restricting the region’s autonomy, the government abolished the Legislative Assembly and called for the special election.
