People in Pec were discussing Christmas and New Year traditions

12.12.2017

Last Russian Language classes of advanced level took place in Pec, Hungary on December 12. The courses participants are not only students but also the city inhabitants.

Some of the students have already passed B2 level. They have made a significant progress in language studies and also learned new things about Russian history and culture.

The participants have learned many new things about Christmas and New Year's traditions both in Hungary and Russia. Students from the neighbor city Baja have also come to the gathering in Russian Center of the Pec University.

Day of Saint Lucia is celebrated in Hungary on December 13th. Many folk customs are connected to this day, probably because before the Gregorian calendar was introduced this day was the winter solstice. Girls and women don't work this day. They make predictions following old pagan rituals. There are two Lucys in the common knowledge of Hungarians: a “good” one, and a “bad” one, a witch. The beliefs are most commonly connected to the latter.
