Mural painting works at the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Brussels have been started, website of Brussels-Belgium Archbishopric of Russian Orthodox Church reports.
The works are headed by Deacon Nicholas Lubardich from Serbia, who is specializing in painting frescoes. Three-layer composition depicts deeds of the Holy Trinity: the world creation scenes (the upper layer), the Gospel’s chronicles (the middle layer) and doings of Christian Saints including Church Fathers (the lower layer). The inscription about history of the temple’s purchase will be placed above the frescoes. The works are expected to be over in a year.
The Cathedral was consecrated in 2003. It has unique history. The Orthodox Parish of St. Nicholas in Brussels started searching for new premises for a new temple. A woman from the parish had a Muslim husband who found the old church in 2001. The building was meant to be pulled over and the patch of land had to be sold to build a skyscraper. However, Department for Monuments’ Protection prohibited pulling over the old church and property owners gladly sold the building to Russian Orthodox Church.
The Cathedral was passed to Brussels- Belgium Eparchy in October 2005 and got an official status from local authorities in 2006. Until present times it has been a Patriarchal stauropegial church.
Representative office of Russian Orthodox Church at European International Organizations has been accommodated here since 2003. Besides, three-year Russian language theological catechetic courses, Russian school and archives of Russian immigration are located inside.
