Russian MFA calls EU for turning attention to situation of Russians at the Baltic States

28.12.2017

Russian Foreign Ministry European Union should give an unbiased evaluation of situation of the Russian-speaking community at the Baltic States, according to the Foreign Ministry of the Russian Federation. According to representative of Russian Foreign Ministry Anatoly Viktorov, it is high time for Brussels to do something to resolve the conflict, RIA Novosti informs.

Such was the comment of the head of Foreign Ministry Department for Humanitarian Cooperation and Commissioner for Human Rights and Democracy to the presentation of European Union dedicated to problems of national minorities and discrimination of population in the European countries.

Authors of the document have put many efforts into investigation of living standards of Russian-speaking population at the Baltic States for the first time over the last years, he commented. At this, the document contains a serious methodologic mistake made intentionally, he is sure. The situation of Russian-speaking minority is compared to the situation of newly arrived immigrants and the main difference between them which is their legal status is completely ignored.

Authors of the document state that if compared to gypsies and migrants, Russian-speaking minority in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania is almost privileged.

Anatoly Viktorov has reminded that the EU presentation does not mention any cases of discrimination of Russians. It seems that statistics is deliberately meant to match certain results, the diplomat remarks.

He has explained that authors preferred to turn the blind eye to continuous for almost twenty-five years phenomenon of mass absent nationality status of Russian-speaking population in Lithuania and Estonia, which entailed deprivation of political, social and economic rights of thousands of people.
