Catholics and Protestants all over the world including catholic and some protestant communities in Russia celebrate one of the main Christian holidays – Christmas today. Many Russians residing in Europe, USA and other western countries celebrate Christmas following the Gregorian calendar. Millions of Christians in Russia and in the world met Christmas Eve in catholic churches yesterday’s night, TASS informs.

Special Christmas Eve worship service was held at Catholic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Moscow. The festive night service was headed by Archbishop Paolo Pezzi. Christmas sermons in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception and in other cathedrals were conducted in Russian, Latin, English, French, Spanish, Polish and many other languages.

Following the catholic traditions, Christmas precedes Advent – a period of waiting and preparation for the Holiday, which started on December 3 this year. At this time, Church encourages believers to ponder on the forthcoming Birth of Christ.

Archbishop of Evangelical-Lutheran Church of Russia Dietrich Brauer believes that Christmas is the only holiday when people, even non-Christians, are attracted to churches.

Catholics have a custom to sit one table together and eat fasting dishes on Christmas Eve. All Christians forgive each other and wish all the best awaiting Christmas.

Traditional international Christmas music festival will be organized at Catholic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Moscow. The best organists of Europe and soloists of the State Symphony Orchestra New Russia of Yuri Bashmet will take part in the festival. Finances gathered at the concerts will be directed to restoration of the Cathedral organ, church maintenance and charity.
