UN declares 2019 the International Year of Dmitri Mendeleev Periodic Table

Following the suggestion of Minister of Russian Education and Science Olga Vasilyeva, UN General Assembly has declared 2019 to be International Year of Dmitri Mendeleev Periodic Table, TASS reports. Press- service of the Russian Ministry of Education and Science has claimed that various activities will be dedicated to 150th anniversary of creation the Periodic Table by D. I. Mendeleev.

Commenting on the decision of the General Assembly, Olga Vasilyeva has paid tribute to national school of chemistry, stating that it is hard to overestimate world-changing discoveries and heritage of the greatest chemist and his followers – Mikhail Kucherov and Alexander Butlerov. Minister has also added that traditions started by Mendeleev exist today. Russian scientists are taking part in discovering new chemical elements. Besides, our schoolchildren demonstrate outstanding results at International Olympiads on Chemistry.

It is worth reminding that last year the Periodic Table was replenished by four new elements. Names of the two elements are connected to Russia and scientists – physicians working in Dubna – Moscovium (115) and Oganesson (118).
