Russian Avant-Garde Architecture exhibition opens in Paris

02.11.2017

Ogulbibi MARSIASRussian Avant-Garde Architecture Drawings from Sergey Tchoban's Collectuion exhibition has opened in Beaux-Arts de Paris, writes Russian Witness newspaper. Current exhibit reflects very short and intence period of time in Soviet architecture's history that lasted during 1920 - 1930s. Many outstanding projects and ideas were expressed at that time but most of them have sinked into oblivion, along with their creators.

Curators have chosen 40 works of art of the most important names in Russian avant-garde from Tchoban's large collection. All these works stand against pre-revolutional “classical” architecture. Young people wanted create the new world not only in society but also in USSR architecture.

These experimental ideas were mostly born in VhUTEMAS (Higher state artistic and technical studios), often compared with German BAUHAUS. The roster of students and faculty at VKhUTEMAS included Alexandra Ekster, Gustav Klutsis, El Lissitzky, Kazimir Malevich, and Lyubov Popova. New Soviet artchitects and artists have done hundreds drafts that were never realised since in 1930 VHUTEMAS was closed.

VHUTEMAS archives are saved in private collections. In particular, Sergey Tchoban owns 150 pieces and often organises exhibits to share this amazing heritage with others.

Beaux-Arts de Paris exhibition also includes artsworks that demonstrate gradual transition from avant-garde to social realism. Curators are sure these pieces will attract special attention.

Russian architect Sergei Tchoban was born in St. Petersburg where he studied architecture at the Imperial Academy of Arts. In 1991 he moved to Berlin where he eventually opened his own company. Later, in 2006 he has launched Russian architectural offices SPEECH in Moscow. In 2010, Tchoban was a curator of the Russian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale. Sergei Tchoban is also well-known for his fantasy drawings that are exhibited widely. He is one of the world’s most important private collectors of architectural drawings and has designed and built a museum in Berlin to exhibit them.
