Russian female chess players win entire pedestal of the World Championship

Alexandra Kosteniuk was named the continent champion. She received 10,5 points in 13 tournaments. Only half point less was regarded to Ekaterina Lango who respectively has got the silver medal. Valentina Gunnina took the third place receiving 9,5 points.

Russian chess grandmaster and Women's World Chess Champion Alexandra Kosteniuk was born in Perm in 1984. She learned to play chess at the age of 5 after being taught by her father, Honoured Coach of Russia Konstantin Kosteniuk. She won the Russian Women's Championship in 2005 and 2016. Five years ago she took gold at the women's individual blitz event of the 2008 World Mind Sports Games in Beijing. In 2013, Kosteniuk became the first woman to win the men’s Swiss Chess Championship.

It is worth mentioning that Alexandra Kosteniuk is a member of the "Champions for Peace" club, a group of elite athletes committed to serving peace in the world through sport created by Peace and Sport, a Monaco-based international organization.
