Hague celebrates 200th anniversary of St. Mary Magdalene Orthodox Cathedral

Grand Duchess Anna Pavlovna Romanova, the wife of King Wilhelm II of the Netherlands, Russian queen of the Netherlands has founded St. Mary Magdalene Cathedral in Hague.

As per the Russkiy Mir Foundation journalist from Hague Inessa Filatova, Russian Ambassador to the Netherlands Alexander Shulgin, Belarus Ambassador Nikolai Borisevich, representatives of the Netherlands Royal Court and Netherlands protestant church were present at the celebrations of 200th anniversary of the cathedral. The Divine Liturgy and later requiem to Wilhelm II and the Grand Duchess Anna Pavlovna were served by Archbishop of Brussels and Belgium Simon. The church utensils brought to the Netherlands by Anna Pavlovna were used for administrating the Sacraments.

Russian Ambassador to the Netherlands Alexander Shulgin congratulated the audience with a significant date and expressed his gratitude to members of the Netherlands Royal Court who found tie to attend this celebration, calling it a true sign of friendship and mutual respect between our countries. He expressed words of gratitude to His Majesty the King Willem-Alexander and his wife for their ongoing support of cultural ties between our countries. The Ambassador talked about the history of the cathedral foundation noting that it is very symbolic that the initial place for the first Orthodox Cathedral in Hague is now occupied by the Grand Peace Palace.

Alexander Shulgin handed in the Certificate of Merit of the Russian Embassy to Archimandrite Nikon for preserving spiritual and historical heritage of Russia and contribution into spiritual and moral upbringing of the coming generation in the Orthodox tradition as well as to the treasurer of the support foundation of the Russian Orthodox Church of St. Mary Magdalene in Hague Nicholas Conein, who contributed to the full renovation of the church premises, icons and utensils and into spiritual and historical heritage of Russia.
