22.10.2017

Russia Defense Ministry Memory of Russian Imperial Fleet lieutenant Mikhail Desyatov is honored in New York, TASS reports. Russian state flag and St. Andrew’s flag were set on his grave. Local authorities, Russian diplomats as well as Russian and US military officers were present at the memorial ceremony.
Lieutenant’s grave is one of the first Russian military burial sites in US, registered by the Russian Defense Department for organizing and leading military memorial work overseas.

According to the head of Defense Ministry department for eternalizing memory of the killed soldiers defending the native land Vladimir Popov, this is a milestone event.

The head of American division of the Russian-American committee for cases of war prisoners and missing soldiers James Conell has explained that people who gathered here would like to pay the tribute to the soldier who honestly served his country.

Lieutenant Desyatov born in 1846 was a member of the crew of Russian corvette Rider. The ship arrived in New York in autumn of 1871 as a part of Russian Imperial Fleet. He died on October 20, 1871 in the naval hospital.

The ceremony was held at his 146th death anniversary.
Earlier, the authorities had cleaned his grave and put a new tomb. They chose marble mined in Vermont State.

It is worth reminding that interaction between Russian and American structures in the field of preserving memory of the killed WWII soldiers continues. Vladimir Popov has underlined that the political disagreements do not impede the work. He has noted that the countries deal with searching data about captive prisoners and missing soldiers.
