Mikhail Baryshnikov is honored with Praemium Imperiale International Arts Award

Saeima/wikimedia.orgDancer, actor and choreographer Mikhail Baryshnikov was honored with Praemium Imperiale International Arts Award in Tokyo by His Imperial Highness Prince Hitachi, honorary patron of the Japan Art Association. The award is given to creative figures for the high achievements.

According to the legendary choreographer, he is very proud of this award. Baryshnikov is sure that it is very important for a real artist to fight vulgarity and to serve art with one's total contribution.

Mikhail Baryshnikov is considered to be one of the most important dancers of 20th century. After commencing a spectacular career with the Kirov Ballet in Leningrad, Mikhail Baryshnikov moved to New York. He was dancing for American Ballet Theatre and New York City Ballet, where he worked with George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins. Then he was appointed artistic director of ABT nurturing new generation of dancers and choreographers. As an actor he has performed widely on- and off-Broadway, as well as in television and film, receiving a Tony Award nomination and a Drama Desk Award.

It is worth mentioning that other Imperiale International Arts awards 2017 were received by Afro-pop superstar Youssou N’Dour (Senegal), architect Rafael Moneo (Spain), visual artists Shirin Neshat (Iran) and El Anatsui (Ghana).

In different years such Russian laureats as ballet dancer Maya Plisetskaya, composer Sofia Gubaidulina, cello player Mstislav Rostrapovich, artists Ilya and Emilia Kabakov have received Imperiale International Arts Award.
