Ilya and Emilia Kabakov retrospective exhibition opens in London

19.10.2017

In the Communal Kitchen, fragment (Ilya and Emilia Kabakov)/Art4.ruIlya and Emilia Kabakov Not Everyone Will Be Taken Into the Future exhibition opens in Tate Gallery, RIA Novosti reported.

Speaking at the opening ceremony about the exhibit, Emilia Kabakov has touched issues of difference in conceptual art perception by people with various backgrounds, and the the role of Russian language in the artist's creativity. According to her the Western audience perceives Russian art distantly and not always “reads” hints and allusions of paintings or installations. On the other hand, Russian public takes Kabakov's works very much to heart, and sometimes even offends with allusions on the Soviet past.

There are three major and rarely exhibited installations presented for the first time: The Man Who Flew into Space from His Apartment 1985, Labyrinth (My Mother’s Album)1990 and Not Everyone Will Be Taken Into the Future 2001. «Appearing as if they have been recently vacated, these uncanny environments draw spectators into the absurd and moving stories of these often fictional characters.» - says the Tate Gallery review. Also there old conceptual works of Ilya Kabakov such as Football Player (1964) and some others.

Emilia Kabakov has marked that despite the fact that they live in US, Ilya Kabakov was always the Russian artist.

The London exhibition will conclude on January 28 2018, afterwards moving to Moscow.
