10th International Mstislav Rostropovich festival held in Samara

Flickr/music202010th International Festival devoted to the famous cellist Mstislav Rostropovich was held in Samara on 15 and 16 October, RussianMinistry of Culture portal reports. Worldwide known conductor Valery Gergiev is the festival initiator.

Samara Symphony orchestra of the Mariinsky theatre under Valery Gergiev have opened the festival on October 15th. Symphonic pieces by Dmitri Shostakovich, Sergei Prokofiev and Rodion Shchedrin were played by the orchestra and soloist pianist Sergei Redkin.

The second day of the festival brought two concerts on the stage of the Samara Opera and ballet theatre; one of them was a charity event. Strauss, Brahms and Skryabin were in programme. In the evening Samara audience enjoyed Harold in Italy by Berlioz, Concert for piano by Poulenc and Bolero by Ravelle.

The musical celebration devoted to the famous cello player has become recognized not only in Europe but in other countries as well. It's worth mentioning that Mstislav Rostropovich has performed in Samara many times. After coming back from exile to his birth land he has staged Visions of Ivan the Terrible opera by Soviet composer Sergei Slonimsky.
