St. Petersburg hosts its first Interparliamentary Assembly

16.10.2017

State HermitageThe 137th Interparliamentary Assembly has started in Saint Petersburg, RIA Novosti informs. Its logo this year is Advancing Cultural Pluralism and Peace through Interreligious and Interethnic Dialogue.

Russia accepts delegates of the most accredited parliamentary organization comprising more than 170 countries of the world. Participants of the assembly plan to discuss topical issues of the international agenda and perspectives of closeness between various cultures and religions in order to create an atmosphere of peace and understanding.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, spokespersons of the Upper House and the Lower House of the Parliament Valentina Matvienko and Vyacheslav Volodin will take part in the Assembly.

More than forty sessions of different commissions and groupings will be organized within the nearest five days. At the end of the Interparliamentary Assembly, delegates will make a resolution By the 20th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration on Democracy: Unity of Variety. Besides, the elections of a new chairman of the Assembly will take place. There will be negotiations with spokespersons of Parliamentary Assembly of Council of Europe. Its management is concerned about unwillingness of Russia to work as a part of this organization. Valentina Matvienko has remarked that our deputies would not leave the organization “slamming the door”, however today’s rules and exclusion from the poll of the Russian delegation do not leave them the other choice.

One of the key questions evoking interest of the society and media is a meeting and possible negotiations between delegations of North Korea and South Korea. Though, Valentina Matvienko has acknowledged that their possibility is highly improbable.
