Russian Center in Costa Rica operates despite hurricane

10.10.2017

Executive director of Russkiy Mir Foundation Vladimir Kochin and President of Chamber for Trade and Tourism of Costa Rica Ernesto Jimenez at the ceremony of signature of the minutes about start of operations in Russian Center To say that football in Costa Rica is the main kind of sports means to say almost nothing. Football here is a way of life, religion and a national dignity. Maria hurricane, which happened in the country on 5 – 6 of October, caused multiple damages, washed out roads and unfortunately brought casualties. It also made country’s authorities change traffic routes, block roads, cancel school lessons, close state and private institutions and, which is the most important thing, shift for one day the national event - a football match giving a chance to Costa Rica team to win the trip to World Cup in Russia. Can you imagine? One more day of tedious waiting and doubts when people had to persuade themselves that nothing unexpected would happen and the trip to Russia will finally happen.

It finally happened! Costa Rica needed a draw and it gained it on the fifth added minute of the second time. Russia! Russia! Russia! was the most popular motto of the match. It seems like the whole country is going to come to Russia and cheer for their national team.

The hurricane disrupted the opening ceremony of the Russian Center at Chamber of Tourism and Trade of Costa Rica planned for October 6, as the gusts of wind were especially strong that day. The ceremony was reduced to signature of minutes about start of operations in the Center. In several hours, after the match was over, more than one hundred and thirty people came to enroll for Russian language courses in the Russian Center. The Center started to work.
