Orthodox Christians celebrate Exaltation of the Holy Cross Feast

27.09.2017

Patriarchia.ruOrthodox Christians celebrate The Exaltation of the Holy Cross today. It is one of the main twelve Christian feasts. This day is remembered as the date when Saint Helena sent by Emperor Constantine to Jerusalem found the cross where Jesus was crucified. When she discovered the holy relics, she split it into two parts. One part was left in Jerusalem, the other part was delivered to Constantinople.

Traditionally churches and cathedrals start night services, which ends up with Cross procession in the morning. The believers worship it with prayers to God.

Patriarch Kirill, who is currently paying a visit to Astrakhan, rendered the night service in Cathedral in honor of Kazan Icon of Mother-of-God, TASS reports. He served the Divine Liturgy in Dormition Cathedral of the Astrakhan Kremlin.

The church recommends spending most time praying and then having a family dinner in the evening. Despite it is a feast, the menu should be fasting only.
