25.09.2017

Previously unknown composition of Dmitry Shostakovich was found in the Main Archive Department of the Moscow region, Interfax reports.

Composition named Imprompu set in very typical for Dmitry Shostakovich cursive handwriting was discovered among personal archive documents of violist Vadim Borisovsky who passed away in 1972. Experts from Glinka Music Culture Museum Shostakovich Archive have confirmed that the manuscript is original, and the music was not played before. Specialists mark that this composition was written spontaneously – еhis fact is confirmed by the certain date, signature and inscription.

The manuscript contains two single-sided pages filled by the author. There's a viola part on the first, and the the full score on the other page.

The dedicatory inscription is dated May 2 1931. It says “To very dear Alexander Mikhailovich in memory of our meeting. D. Shostakovich, Leningrad”. Experts think that this piece was a gift to one of the founders of Glazunov Quartet Alexander Ryvkin. It's a mystery yet, how violinist and composer met, and why this manuscript has ended up in the archive of the other musician. Music historians will try to answer these questions.
